Guinness Ltd. – Smithwick’s Irish Red Ale

Smithwick's Irish RedTHAT THIS BEER is made by Guinness is a giveaway from the first sip: though technically a red ale—thus lighter, hoppier, and  with fewer roasted malts—Smithwick’s has a very similar malty mouthfeel and toasted bread quality. Less dry in the aftertaste, though, and with a lighter, brighter body that dissolves some of the burnt edge of Guinness. A touch peppery, fairly high on the carbonation, and light on alcohol at 4.5%. Simply put in local terms: a combination of Emmett’s McCarthy Red and Dry Irish that is greater than the sum of its parts. And greater than Guinness Draught, frankly
