AN IMPERIAL STOUT that rounds out all the basics well—deep tan and creamy head, pitch and slightly viscous appearance, slight crackle in the mouthfeel and plenty high-gravity—but with some extra phenols for zip, it seems, towards the back end. Resulting finish is rather dry, echoing cocoa powder more than liquid chocolate, but not parching. Borders on a bit astringent and charred, but the aroma actually seems a bit hotter and packed with wintry spices than the beer itself. Slightly discombobulated, but commendably contained for its 10%.The barrel-aged version could be a serious coup.
