CHICAGO’S CRAFT SCENE CONTINUES to expand with Argus, who despite their young brand have already launched a ‘private reserve’ line with this 6% English Porter. Bountiful carbonation deposits a massive light tan head with excellent lacing atop a brew so deep and dark a red as to be nearly brown. Aromas are of earthy coffee and toasted malt, some alcohol. On the palate the carbonation persists through a medium body led by the kind of middling coffee roast one finds in ice cream. Some cocoa and a little burnt toast zero in the finish, which is fairly dry. Traditional indeed, and thus no improvement, and thus not meriting its original $13 price tag. But at $2.99, one of the best around.
