AT FIRST TALKING a big game ((aside from the Simpsons reference, the name sounds more like an Axe body spray scent than a beer), Sun King’s Stupid Sexy Flanders is more modest in the details, referencing aging in “very spent” bourbon barrels. The former claim is a bit oversized and the latter entirely fair: though appropriately rusty in color and giving off bits of barnyard must, this beer has little booze or barrel character to boast. Instead it is assertively tart, a little metallic, and fruity (blackberries), with Brett poking around in the background along with a few darker malts. The body is a little too full, though, despite the sourness, and the carbonation subdued to tiny bubbles. The finish is tangy and acidic—lactic underscored by a little diacetyl—initially potent though it does not last too long. For all that still a decent work.
